Gaenor I Barker BA (Hons) 2016

Organic sculptures in wood inspired by nature. Contrasting scenes of village life from a new perspective, local scenes in acrylics, watercolour pen and ink..

About The Artist

Award Winning Artist, Designer,Maker, Woodcarver Gaenor Barker returns to enjoy her 3 chosen mediums, wood carving, pen and ink drawing and her latest passion ‘wild oak furniture’. Set right in an area of designated natural beauty and tranquility, her studios are set in idyllic surroundings and have a unique historical interest. Close to her woods she draws from life and really submerges herself into the landscape in all its glory.

Gaenor was commissioned by the school’s head teacher to create all the large scale woodcarvings seen at Chulmleigh Community College. Now also working on a smaller scale her personal work is highly original and detailed with a more ethereal quality.  Some of her latest sculptures inspired by nature can be seen in the woods near her home. She becomes part of the landscapes she enters while capturing the views of her secret locations.

Her pastel portrait work equally captures the essence of character. An opportunity to purchase a Portrait sketch by Gaenor on weekend days and some weekdays will be available but better to check her times below and book!

  1. I have three sculptures already completed with two relief woodcarvings getting mounted this week.!!
I will have a photographer taking pictures of living installations which can be found during the exhibition in the woods next to my studio.

  2. Thanks Christina – yes ! Really enjoying working on some of the organic oak roots and making the most of this lovely weather! They are coming together well and will be seen around the Courtyard garden. Smaller mounted pieces are also being completed along with a relief carving. All weather woodwork ! Previous wood used was mainly for indoor display so experimenting with organic woodstains and finishes for outdoor exhibition next year in Oak !

  3. I have Reached an amazing turning point through producing each mounted sculpture in wood and metal for this now more personal and poignant exhibition of my work.
The sculptures relate to each other by way of reflecting on life.
‘Journey through Life’ expresses certain moments in life that have become taboo and have made a profound effect involving grief ..loss and birth. …creating sculptures that move from birth ..loss…life and death. It’s been a challenging cathartic journey of the spirit and the soul. I hope my expressions in Copper, Ivy, cherry and Yew show how previous life is in its many forms. It has been great to create it.

  4. Putting together the combined wood and metal relief sculptures has been a really poignant experience especially as the process has changed focus on the healing of the past. Combined woods such as Cherry, Ivy, Oak and Yew have spiritual meanings and take us through a journey of birth, loss, Life, death and rebirth. A now more reflective result has worked really well on a more personal level. ‘A journey through Life’ is ready to see.
