Wood Engraver’s View on Ageing!

Workshop News

The Hilary Paynter wood-engraving workshop at White Moose, arranged for 24th August is fully booked. We are trying to arrange another one, so watch this space for more details.

Hilary, is one of the UK’s top wood-engravers and shows her work across the country, so White Moose are delighted to be showing her new body of work, ‘Age of Enlightenment’ based on her observations of ageing in today’s society – often humorous, sardonic and political, Hilary’s detailed work is full of fresh ideas, thoughtful and inspiring.

About the Artist, Hilary Paynter

As a student, Hilary originally trained as a sculptor, but in later life took up the ancient skill of wood-engraving, bringing this dying art to the forefront once again with her enthusiasum as a past President of the Society of Wood-engravers. Her practice now focuses on this art-form, which involves cutting directly into hard, end grain woods such as box, lemon and pear (sometimes over a hundred years old) to create detailed works of fine line and texture. Hilary’s subject matter ranges from dramatic landscapes and rugged coastal scenery with strange geological forms to domestic observations and acute socio-political commentary that can be either subtle or savage.
