Edward Crumpton and Hester Berry 2016

Edward Crumpton and Hester Berry invite you to visit them in the Hay Loft Studio to see their paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures.

About The Artist

Edward’s ‘Rope Lines’ sculptures is his ongoing relationship with the material, tarred marlin rope. Edward discovered this material when he undertook research into an ancient walk called ‘The Mariner’s Way’ and found that this type of rope was regularly used on traditional sailing ships. With this material he intends to use the rope to create diverse patterns, objects or structures which can be seen in his studio environment. These Rope Line Artworks can be displayed in front of sunlit windows, allowing the light to create interesting shadows across the internal space. Also included in the studio are a number of oil and watercolour paintings based around islands of the British Isles, beginning with Lundy Island and the Isles of Scilly.

Hester’s practice is rooted in traditional representation and methods, but she constantly challenges her understanding of paint, print and drawing, exploring ways to represent effects such as light, time, movement and climate. Drawn to dark spaces, she tries to use the marks available as economically as possible, distilling the image/feeling/moment into what is necessary. Since the birth of photography, it has been necessary for painting to find a new voice. It must say something which cannot be expressed with a camera. Paint enables Hester to explore her world, and lends a voice with which to comment on modern life.
