Currently I am hand building with black stoneware clay – concentrating on form. My work is quite large and probably seen to best effect outside amongst foliage.
About The Artist
Glazing and decoration tends to be matt but changes according to the needs of the shape. Currently I’m intrigued by the colours and forms of lichens and am influenced by African and Australian art.
Standing stones have always held a fascination for me. The stones are no more than a weathered block of rock , with weather softened tops and rounded sides and it doesn’t seem to matter that the reasons for their being are often unknowable, it is enough to feel the awesome sense of solidity, the permanence, their sheer presence – all of which I find immensely reassuring.
I don’t think in advance about what I’m going to make and am often surprised at what emerges, but I like the idea that sometimes it is enough to just see the silhouette – which is a reason I work with slim shapes and like working with black clay, and I hope that any decoration with glazes brings some lightness, vibrancy and extra interest without detracting from the shape.
