Collected Snippets From Artists

Some of the things artists have been saying on the run-up to this years’ Art Trek (2016).

As the time draws near for the start of Open Studios in September, artists’ preparations are in full swing. We have been listening to discussions and getting emails about artists progress as well as updates about their work. This is what people are saying :

Awakening by Fiona MatthewsFrom Fiona Matthews:

I was delighted to be asked to participate in this year’s Bideford Bay Creatives – where for the month of August you can see art installations in business settings, as well as all sorts of films, walks, workshops and lots of fun. A big thank you to Charlotte and Martin of Natures Nutrition for inviting me to put an installation in one of their windows. The NDArttrek website is being looked at – already I have had several enquiries, and we still have several weeks to go before the ‘off’ !

Fiona’s ceramic sculptures are striking shapes taken from nature – simple and strong.

From Philip Rycroft:

As we are all busy getting ready for the ArtTrek, isn’t it ironic, we are distracted by a very exciting Olympics and the latest weather front has given us landscape painters some fabulous evening clouds, shadows and light. Will have to make good use of the TV recorder.

Philip’s Bright landscapes in watercolour and inks catch the eye and cheer the heart.

From Christina Bonnett :

Although the beaches, cliffs and sea are exciting, and many North Devon artists are based on or near the coast, let’s not forget that artists can be found in the beautiful hills and valleys of rural areas, some near Mid Devon, so people who live there can find artists nearby.

Christina is one of the artists in the Southern-most part of North Devon. Her  paintings inspired by her surroundings include landscapes and studies of objects found around farmland.

From Gaenor I Barker BA (Hons) :

Art = playtime ..enjoyment = Creativity
What a joy …

Gaenor makes imaginative woodcarvings and holds workshops on portraiture and painting. She is inspired by nature and loves to work outdoors.

Magazine, Ceramic review cover 2016-07-25.From the Ceramic review Magazine:

Katherine Caddy, Assistant Editor, informed us our Gallery page feature inside the latest issue of Ceramic Review magazine was out, and ended with…

We hope this brings great things.

The title of the feature is ‘Made In Devon’ and goes on to mention three ceramicists among our 40 or so artists; Fiona Matthews, Mitch Pilkington and Michael Storrs, whose sculpture was pictured.

This is the cover of the magazine on 25 July 2016 – the date of the Gallery page feature.

From Jill Rousseau Gallery:

I really want this show to be special! The two makers we have selected to show during Art Trek will put together a well-balanced and cohesive display of work.

Jill opened her gallery in Bideford in 2015 after 22 years experience elsewhere.

From Hester Berry:

I have been exploring the beach and the coast paths, sketching –  It’s a wonderfully inspiring place, so rich in history.

Hester has recently been artist in residence at Buck’s Mills cabin. She works with her own hand made paint, made with ‘Bideford Black’, a natural local pigment.

From Stella Levy:

Hope you all like the look of the new brochure as much as we do; thanks to designer Bruce Aitken for producing a clear and contemporary brochure for us once again.

Stella Levy is a committe member of the NDA, and is a large part of the drive behind the organisation of NDArt Trek. She is also the owner of White Moose Gallery.

And Finally an announcement from Stella of White Moose Gallery:

New venture for White Moose!

  2. Fantastic news, Devon Life has given the NDArt trek Open Studios a lovely two page spread in their current issue! This brings the event to the attention of so many different people and highlights the many talented artists and makers across North Devon.
